IR Camera System
by MARS Group

POS partnered with Daniel Zitterbart Marine Animal Remote Sensing (MARS) Group at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution to use Infrared Camera Technology to automatically detect large whales for estimating abundance and to study their behavior around marine vessels. This system was deployed at the end of the summer 2020 on Saturna Island over looking Boundary Pass and hosted by SIMRES.

Samples like this one will be used to further optimize the AI to the local conditions encountered in the this area.
Below we have an example of a Humpback Whale encounter observed by this system on October 22, 2020 at 7 am local Pacific time (or 2 pm UTC time).
